ADHD Music

How the ADHD Playlist on This Site Was Built (And Why Each Mood Matters)

The playlists on Listen To My Voice aren't random — each mood category is built around a specific neurological purpose.

There are thousands of playlists labeled 'focus music' or 'ADHD music' online. Most are assembled based on vibe rather than function. The playlists on this site are built differently — each mood category corresponds to a specific neurological state or need, informed by what research and lived experience suggest actually works for ADHD brains.

Focus

Focus playlists are built for deep, sustained cognitive work. They lean toward binaural beats, steady rhythm, and music in languages the listener doesn't speak (to prevent lyric-tracking from hijacking attention). The tempo sits around 60–80 BPM — fast enough to stay stimulating, slow enough not to create urgency.

Calm

Calm playlists are designed for overstimulation recovery and nervous system downshift. Lower tempo, fewer harmonic surprises, longer note durations. The goal is to provide gentle auditory input that doesn't demand attention, while reducing cortisol activation.

Study

Study playlists occupy the middle ground between focus and background music. Lo-fi hip-hop, jazz, and indie acoustic sit here — engaging enough to stay present, predictable enough not to pull focus.

Sleep

Wind-down playlists start at a lower energy and get progressively quieter and simpler. Piano, soft guitar, ambient textures. Designed to signal transition rather than sustain alertness.

Kids Routine

Kids routine playlists serve a different function: behavioral cueing. Gentle, predictable, and consistent enough to become a reliable signal for specific times of day — morning, homework, bedtime.
